Nail plate
Definition:

A flat metal plate of various widths and lengths usually in 16 gauge with various hole patterns to attach the plates to the studs.  The purpose of a nail plate is to protect plumbing lines behind the wall and to add support to the studs after they have been notched to allow for passage of plumbing lines.  For an illustration, please see this drawing.
